About URF
URF has been the student radio station for Sussex University since 1976. We’re proud of our history as one of the only un-playlisted student stations in the country, giving our members the freedom to play the songs they want! We broadcast a great mix of music, talk and news every day from 10am ‘til 10pm. And the station is run entirely by student volunteers who give up their time every week to help present, produce and manage URF. We now broadcast exclusively to the world at www.urfonline.com Winners of the 2010 Student Radio Award for Best Technical Achievement and 2011 Student Radio Award for Best Interview.

URF - History

Station Founded 1976University Radio Falmer was set up in 1976 as a community radio station to serve the campuses of the University of Sussex and Brighton Polytechnic, in the village of Falmer on the outskirts of Brighton, East Sussex. Storage rooms in Norwich House, a Sussex halls of residence, were converted into studio facilities and URF applied for an AM licence. The station then broadcast on a variety of AM frequencies for many years and became incredibly popular with staff and students at both university campuses. For some of this time the station was known simply as 'Radio Falmer' but on the whole it was the acronym URF that was used to describe the station. From the very beginning, it was clear that URF was going to be a very student focussed station. With no playlists and micro-management, members were free to play the music they wanted. In 1986 the URF was crowned Best Station at the NUS Guardian Student Radio Awards. With the decline in listenership on AM, URF seized transmitting on 1431AM from 2008 and now broadcast solely online at urfonline.com.
