Station Founded 1967University Radio York (URY) is the student radio station for the University of York, broadcasting 24 hours a day during term time on 1350am across the University's Heslington Campus and worldwide via ury.org.uk. The station is run by students for students, meaning the people behind the station understand what the listenership want to hear. With no playlist and no set format to many of our shows, our presenters have the chance to try whatever they like, as long as it's legal! URY has a rich history of pioneering broadcasting, beginning in 1968 when URY became the UK's first legal independent radio station. After beginning life as a student's hobby in 1967 it assumed full-time broadcasting status the following year. Since then it has continued to grow, developing its studio facilities and resources, and gaining the respect and professionalism which can be heard on-air today. URY holds several Student Radio Awards with highlights including Best Station 2005, Best Journalistic Programming 2009, runner up Best Journalist Programming 2010 and runner up Best Female 2010. In 2011 URY received many Student Radio Awards including runner up Best Station, The Kevin Greening Award and Best Entertainment Programme.
